THIS WEEK…

Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop:

This week our reading and writing have gone hand in hand...again!  J We have been focusing on reading informational books and writing informational pieces.  Our focus had been on community helpers, which was great!  We now are learning about Patriotism!  This week our reading and writing has been focused on symbols.  The children have learned about the American Eagle, Statue of Liberty, American Flag, and the Liberty Bell.  Ask your children about these symbols…you will be “wowed” by their answers!

FYI…our “community helpers” classroom book is making its rounds.  Please just keep it one night, check off your name and send it back in your child’s backpack.  Also, your child will be bringing home one of their informational books they have written.  Please read it with your child and send it back in the next day as well!  Thanks so much!

THIS WEEK

Reader’s Workshop:

This week the children have successfully used the “questioning” thinking strategy to ask questions about their just right books.  Remember…when using the questioning strategy, the children use those key questioning words to start their sentences.  These words include; how, why, what, who, when, and where.  Try having your children ask questions as you read aloud to them this week – and don’t forget to model these skills yourself!  Also – try asking your children if the book you are reading is “informative” or “literary”.  You will be awed by their answers!

Writer’s Workshop:

This week the children have been continuing to look at nonfiction books as a writer, and learned how to write a question, which goes hand in hand with reading.  We’ve been working our way through very interesting nonfiction books about all types of animals.  We made a check list of what we noticed while we were reading our nonfiction books.  We realized that nonfiction books have a title, table of contents, headings, captions, labels, index, and a glossary!  The children also learned how to compose a question sentence.  They learned that a question has to start with the same words we are using in reading - how, why, what, who, when, where, and are.  Try having your child write one question from a book that you read to them at night!

Homework/Book Bag

In your child’s backpack is their new book bag and writing journal, which will be sent home Monday-Thursday.  You will be guiding your child as they compose a correctly formed sentence.  The instructions are glued in the front of the journal.  Also, your child will be selecting a book to bring home daily to read to you.  This will be a book that they selected during reader’s workshop.  Please make sure that they return both book and journal each day. Enjoy!  J

Update

I just wanted to give you an update about my mom.  We have been waiting anxiously for her to recover from her kidney surgery so that she can have her thyroid surgery.  We finally got the call yesterday that it will be on Monday; therefore I will be out on that day and maybe Tuesday.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers – our family greatly appreciates it!

THIS WEEK…

Reader’s Workshop:

This week we focused on monitoring for meaning while we were reading.  We discussed that reading is like driving a car…sometimes things get in the way, like tricky words and we have to figure out how to get around the tricky words like a bump in the road!  We decided that if you get to a tricky word you could simply look at the picture to try and figure it out.  You also get your lips ready for sounding out the tricky word, and then try and think about the meaning of the story.  These are all great strategies to help your children with words that are like bumps in the road!  Give these strategies a try at home when your child is reading to you!

I also wanted to say thanks again for all the hard work on the popcorn words.  I have enclosed a special yellow “MAGIC” marker to “butter” up all the popcorn words your children can find in newspapers and magazines.  I reminded them not to use the “magic” marker in our precious books.  Your might want to give another reminder!

Writer’s Workshop:

This week we have been working on the beginning, middle, and the end of a story.  The children have been working diligently on this process, and Mr. Calvert and I have been very impressed!  They have also been retelling their stories across their fingers – try having them do this at home with the stories they have written, and after you read a book!  You will certainly be impressed!

Reminders…

  • Library is always on Tuesday and books are due back on Fridays!
  • If you haven’t sent in a snack donation please do so!
  • If you would like to donate snacks for our classroom please send in pretzels or goldfish!

Tackett Family

Let’s see…what’s new going on in my crazy household.

Sophie, my ten year old, is doing great – she is the model student and loves homework, with the exception that she is completely boy crazy!!!!  Don and I are not sure about 5th  grade – but she sure does seem to love it!  Bella has finally adjusted to kindergarten and seems to simply tolerate it!   She is the baby after all – and I think she would rather she and I just stay home and snuggle. LOL!  She really isn’t interested in homework or learning how to read, which is so different than Sophie.  I’m trying to not worry and just let nature take its course!  Then there is Don, poor Don…he is surrounded by a household full of girls…what more can I say!

I also wanted to update you with my mom.  She is doing well and is slowly recovering.  We had a little scare after her surgery, which put her in the hospital for another five days – ten days total.  They did remove all the cancer from her kidney, which is amazing.  Her surgery for thyroid cancer has been rescheduled due to how long it has taken her to recover from this surgery.  I will update you with that when the time gets closer.  Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes – our family greatly appreciates it!
